| My Fiat manual states that the service interval is every 25000 miles but as I only drive about 2500 miles per year will the oil last 10 years? | |
Your manual assumes the vehicle is a normal panel van used for commercial purposes where this distance is usually covered in less than a year. You should refer to the service schedule section that excludes vehicles used at high ambient temperatures, dusty or sandy environments or used regularly at high payloads. When the Fiat platform was built it was designed around 1.6 tonnes, following motorhome conversion, this increased to around 2.9 tonnes or more, therefore used regularly at high payloads is applicable and an annual low mileage service is recommended. |
| The tyre pressures quoted in my Fiat handbook are different to those in the habitation handbook? | |
Always go by the figures stated in the habitation manufacturer's handbook as these account for the weight after conversion. |
| How can I be sure my motorhome won't freeze up during the winter? | |
Fully drain down the fresh water system leaving the drain bung out or the drain tap open, leave all taps in the open position and remove the shower head. Open the boiler dump valve, remove the water pump fuse and disconnect the habitation battery. |
| My fresh water smells musty? | |
This is due to stagnant water in the tank. To resolve, fully drain the system down and flush through thoroughly with clean water. If the smell persists, add a proprietary tank cleaner too. |
| How long should my habitation battery work for before it goes flat? | |
Dependant on what you are using about 3 days is normal. Remember that the battery is designed to operate from flat to empty rather than a permanent state of fully charged like the engine battery. Always ensure it is recharged for 2 to 3 days from a mains hook up. Even though it receives a trickle charge from the engine this will not be sufficient to add any significant power no matter how long you are driving for. |
| My motorhome is a 6 berth but I only have 4 seat belts, can I add more? | |
Whilst it is physically possible to fit 3 point belts to forward or rear facing seats and lap belts to side facing, you should consider the following; when the vehicle is produced it is "type approved" with the Government with a specific number of seats which is what the insurance companies base their policies on. Prior to any modifications always check with your insurance broker first in case it invalidates your cover. |
| My motorhome was made in 1999 which I regularly use in the London low emission zone, I have been told I will either have to pay a daily charge or scrap it. | |
From January 3rd 2012 all diesel motorhomes produced prior to January 2002 will not meet Euro 3 emission standards and will be subject to a daily charge within the zone, other cities are expected to follow in the future. It is possible to retro fit a diesel particulate filter, this should be carried out by a VOSA registered agent and will be subject to an annual test. The cost is about £2500 to have a diesel particulate filter fitted so you should consider how necessary your journey in the zone is against a 'pay as you use' basis. Of course once the filter is fitted the environment benefits wherever you drive! |
| Can I extend my manufacturer's warranty? | |
The manufacturer's warranty cannot be extended but an extended warranty for specific components can be taken out at any time. |
| I will soon be 70 and my motorhome weighs 3.8 tonnes, will I still be able to drive it? | |
In order to continue driving a vehicle of this weight periodic medical inspections are required, another alternative is to have your motorhome "down-plated". The weight categories are based on what your vehicle would be fully laden, however, if the actual weight and an allowance for passengers, fuel etc is less than a lower threshold then the vehicle can be recertified at this weight. This is a fairly straightforward process usually costing less than £100. In cases where the weight still cannot be reached modifications can be carried out to restrict load carrying capacity. |
| My control panel has frozen and it won't respond to any of the buttons. | |
This is known as lock out and can be caused by interference from coast guards or air traffic control radars whose high power signal overloads the internal circuitry. To resolve just remove the panel which is usually only held in by a few screws, carefully unplug the electrical connection, pause for a minute or so and reconnect. |
