HOW TO PREVENT
MOULD AND MILDEW IN YOUR MOTORHOME

Mould and mildew can be a real issue in motorhomes, and once you have that problem it can be tough to do away with it completely. The ideal thing is to prevent mould and mildew appearing in the first place.

To understand how to prevent mould and mildew, you need to know where they come from and the conditions they thrive in. Mould and mildew are the results of fungal growths. Both prefer damp, humid conditions, but mould, in particular, thrives in the warm.

The tips below outline five things you can do to help prevent mould and mildew appearing in your motorhome.

#1 Keep Your Motorhome Well Ventilated

Good ventilation is one of the most crucial factors in stopping the growth of mould and mildew. Make sure the windows are open for as long as possible if you've been cooking or taking a shower. It’s also useful to open up your motorhome over the winter to let some fresh air in, particularly if it has been shut up for a long period of time. You don’t want to allow any mould or mildew the chance to form when you’re not using your motorhome, particularly if it will have several months to spread unchecked.

#2 Clean Your Motorhome Regularly

Besides making it much more comfortable to stay in, keeping your motorhome clean is vital if you want to fend off mould and mildew. Give your motorhome a deep clean before you use it for the first time each year, particularly if you keep it in storage over the winter. It’s also important to wipe up spills as they happen, rather than letting water sit or pool anywhere, and dry all worktops completely. Vacuum regularly, and use disinfectant when cleaning the surfaces in your motorhome.

#3 Look For Leaks And Damage Regularly

Water can get through the smallest gaps and can quickly cause problems, so you should examine your motorhome thoroughly for any possible damage that might lead to leaks. Your motorhome servicing provider should inspect the structure of your motorhome, but it’s a good habit for you to get into between services as well. #4 Clean Out Your Fridge

A fridge is a perfect place for mould to grow, so be sure to check yours regularly. When you’ve come to the end of a stay in your motorhome, make sure the fridge is clean and dry, then leave the door open to keep it well ventilated. If you notice a musty smell inside the fridge at any time, it’s a good idea to clean it out completely.

#5 Check Soft Furnishings Regularly

Seating, cushions and curtains can all become damp relatively easily, so it’s important to examine these items often. If they do become damp, you should remove them from your motorhome to dry out before mould or mildew set in. You should also make sure that any fabric items or soft furnishings that you bring into your motorhome are completely dry.
Follow these tips to help keep your motorhome free from mould and mildew, and it’ll make your home away from home feel that much more comfortable and enjoyable to stay in.
