Enjoy A Winter Motorhome Holiday in Scandinavia

Enjoy A Winter Motorhome Holiday in Scandinavia
Scandinavia is a wonderful region of the world to explore in a motorhome. But if you thought it was only suitable for the summer, think again. The thought of heading up close to the Arctic Circle in the winter may seem a bit extreme, but there is plenty to see in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland throughout the winter months to make Scandinavia well worth a visit.

Here is a guide to where to go and what to see, as well as some tips for travelling in the region during the winter

Why Visit Scandinavia in the Winter?

Although it will get very cold in the winter, Scandinavian countries are well prepared for it. This means despite the snow, many of the roads will remain accessible throughout the year (apart from mountain passes and the roads in more remote areas). So exploring in your motorhome is not a problem at all.

Winter in Scandinavia provides you with the perfect opportunity for seeing the Northern Lights, one of the great natural sights of the world. They are visible from October to March, but they do not show up every night so you have to look out for them.

If you enjoy winter activities, you will be in your element in any of the Scandinavian countries. Skiing, snowboarding, dog sledding and other activities are all popular throughout the winter months.

And then of course you have Christmas. There are few places more atmospheric to spend Christmas than the home of Father Christmas himself, and you will find plenty of markets, festivities and concerts to enjoy.

See the largest 'gingerbread village' in the world by stopping off in Bergen in Norway, where you will see an incredible gingerbread model.

Drive the Atlantic Road in Norway, a truly stunning road along the Atlantic coast, with amazing views all along the way.

Visit the Jokkmokk Winter Market in Sweden. This is held in February, and thousands of people flock to the town to shop for handicrafts made by the Sámi community. Watch reindeer races on the frozen Lake Talvatissjön, and enjoy folk music and parades.

See the exciting capital cities of Copenhagen, Oslo, Helsinki and Stockholm, all of which have plenty to see and do throughout the winter months.

Visit Sweden's wild and beautiful west coast, where you can stop off in fishing villages, try amazing seafood and enjoy incredible views.

You might also want to visit Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, Finland if you are going to be around for the festive season.
