Hello, I'm Jenny your Motorhome Advisor,
How can I help?

Me

#1
Firstly, please can you tell me what the difference is between a campervan and a motorhome?

Brownhills

It's essentially the difference between a boat and a ship; performance and size. Motorhomes are generally larger and offer a better variety of facilities, including a shower/bathroom and toilet, better-equipped kitchen and more sleeping choices. The driver’s compartment is also separate from the living area.

Ah, I see! So do I need a special licence to drive a motorhome?

Brownhills

The licence you require for a motorhome depends on a number of factors, not least the vehicle's maximum authorised mass. This is calculated by the weight of the motorhome and the maximum weight it can carry. So, for example, if you wish to drive one with a weight of between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, you would be required to have a category C1 licence.

What is the best size motorhome to own?

Brownhills

There is a large range of motorhomes on the market, so this will largely depend on personal preference. If you plan on living in it full time, then the bigger the better. However if your motorhome is your only form of vehicle, then a larger one will restrict your access to parking, entrance to certain areas and it will cost more for fuel. It also depends on how many people are going to use the motorhome. If it's for two, then a smaller size might just be right, but if your home is to fit a family of four, then large would probably be the better choice. You will need to find your ideal size based on your requirements and lifestyle.

Both my Husband and I would like to drive the motorhome, how easy are they to drive?

Brownhills

You'll be pleased to know that most are quite straightforward to drive, however some may take a while to get used to a motorhome's larger size, especially when it comes to manoeuvring in tight spots. Perhaps try using technological devices, such as reversing cameras, to help increase your confidence initially

We don't have much outside space at home. Can I park the motorhome anywhere else?

Brownhills

Look into this before you purchase – you don’t want to be stuck with a motorhome with nowhere to park it. You may find that off-street parking for your car is not suitable for the motorhome. Measure your off-street space before buying your motorhome. It's against the law to sleep in a motorhome while parked on the street, so check with your local council as to whether there are local restrictions on the areas you can park.

Ok - , we want a good quality vehicle at an affordable price - how much do motorhomes cost?

Jenny

This will largely vary on the size of your motorhome, the facilities included within the space and whether you are buying used motorhomes or going for a shiny new one. Remember you will also need to factor in the cost of insurance to cover your motorhome too.

What about annual habitation servicing costs?

Brownhills

You should expect to pay around £250 for an annual motorhome maintenance service.  Mechanical servicing also needs to be done every other year, which can cost around £400.

We have children and want them to travel safely.
Do the rear seats of motorhomes require seat belts?

Brownhills

Seat belts must be worn and fitted in the front seats of motorhomes. Most manufacturers of motorhomes will also fit restraints to forward-facing seats (designated travelling seats) in the rear too. If they are fitted, seat belts must be worn too.

What precautions can I take to prevent the risk of fire?

Brownhills

Always install a smoke detector made to the appropriate British Standard and it's important to carry a portable fire extinguisher. Take extra care when smoking or cooking in the vehicle. It's also a smart idea to have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted too.

How do I keep my motorhome tyres in good condition?

Brownhills

Preferably replace any tyres that are over five years old, but never go beyond seven, as by this time they will have significantly deteriorated. If your motorhome is not used for a significant amount of time, it's recommended that the tyres are taken off and stored in a dry and cool place and protected from heat sources, direct sunlight and oil/fuel spillages.
